A real American heirloom that produces large flowers with edible seeds on massive plants! ‘Arikara’ is named for the Arikara people, an agricultural tribe indigenous to North Dakota, for whom this Sunflower is part of their cultural heritage. Like many heirlooms, ‘Arikara’ is a variable strain, so if you plant a few, don’t expect a cookie-cutter line of sameness! Flower color ranges from yellow to orange, with brown or yellow centers and some plants are multi-headed. Plants are tall and range from 10-12’ in height and 2-3’ wide. The flowers are ultra-attractive to bees, and birds will gladly chomp down the seeds if you don’t get to them first.
