This noteworthy Penstemon features tall stalks of pure white, trumpet-shaped flowers, appearing from mid-spring to mid-summer. Appearing in clusters surrounding the central stem, the 1” flared flowers are much sought after by hummingbirds. Unlike most other penstemons, the 5” lanceolate grayish-green leaves are only found on the lower half of the 3' high plant, putting more of a spotlight on the showy flowers. Beet-red seedpods add early fall interest. Found in dryish soils on the prairies, in open woods or along undisturbed roads, this is a very drought tolerant species. This beauty makes a great addition to a moon (nighttime) garden, adds elegance to a sunny plot and enlivens a dry garden bed. Can be used as a decorative border. Vertical flowering stems make an excellent cut flower. Plant in sun to light shade in well-drained soil and be careful not to over-water.
