Bean varieties are rarely known to most people by name, but ‘Blue Lake’ is a much loved heritage bean. Smooth 6-7” dark green pods, tender, meaty and sweet, string-less and fiber-less at all stages. Their straight pods make them perfect for canning/pickling. Dating back to France 1885, the pole bean form grows to 7’ tall and needs a trellis, netting, or to be grown on bean poles. Nip off the tips if they outgrow the support. ‘Blue Lake’ is known to be disease-resistant and may even do well with a bit of drought. The beans are produced over a long season (unlike the bush form), and it is much easier to pick beans standing up than crouching over a bush.
