It’s easy to see why foodies wax poetic about the “Artichoke of Rome” – it’s truly delicious, with a large, nutty flavored “heart” that’s free from fuzz! Nom nom! The large buds are tinged purple, globe shaped and tender. This form of Artichoke has been in cultivation since 1400! Artichokes are easy plants to grow, but BIG. Give them at least a 3’ footprint in an unsheltered, sunny spot. Artichokes LOVE the Bay Area and thrive near the coast. If you leave the buds growing on the plant they make gorgeous purple blooms that would stop any bee in its tracks! These are also great cut or dried. Feed monthly and plant in rich soil for best results. Summer water optional.
