Powdery mildew is the bane of growing squash, particularly in foggy areas like on the coast of California. Most varieties may even die before the squashes are properly ripened. Enter ‘Metro’ which is particularly resistant to the disease and it comes recommended by Pam Pierce (author of Golden Gate Gardening). ‘Metro’ is a compact Butternut Squash producing 4-5 squashes per plant, each squash weighing 2-3 lbs. They are produced on vines so leave plenty of space to spread, or trellis them with extra support provided for the fruit. Plant in well composted soil and water well in the early stages, but start cutting back on water in August or September to decrease the water levels in the squash for better flavor. Harvest when the shell is hard and the top stem is around 2” long.
