Respect your elders by planting this edible deciduous perennial! Sambucus nigra ‘Korsor’ is a fast-growing Danish black elderberry cultivar. This European elderberry is very ornamental, with large, compound green leaves, it is grown as a multi-trunked tree or bushy shrub, & can be hedged or pruned in late winter to maintain size & shape, generally 8 to 12 feet tall & wide. Developed to have extra-large, extra juicy berries, popular cooked or fermented. ‘Korsor’ blooms in spring & the dainty, butter-yellow to white, lacy flowers are high in sugar content & often used in wines & spirits (make your own St-Germain!). Heaviest fruit set when planted in full sun, though it can tolerate part shade. ‘Korsor’ is partially self-fruitful but will be more productive when planted with cross-pollinating varieties. The berries ripen toward the end of summer or early fall. Needing average to moderate water during the growing season, this cultivar is not picky about soil type or pH & is salt-tolerant. Popular with birds, but it’s a prolific producer so don’t worry about having enough to share!
