This rare dry garden denizen has one of the showiest bloom spikes you'll ever see. Plants first form a 2'x4' clump of olive-green, grass-like leaves then, come early summer, send up a striking flowering stem that can be up to 30” in height. This multi-branching spike has dark red bracts and eventually aquamarine-blue tips. Mature plants will often put up 6-8 of these long-lasting flower spikes during the summer blooming period. With its huge mounds of arching leaves and the crazy wild bloom spikes, this is most definitely meant to be a focal point in your garden. Tough, cold hardy and long lived, this Bolivian native makes do with very little water. It can handle full sun in the temperate areas of our state but wants relief from midday sun in hotter, inland regions. Though it takes a few years to bloom, once it does it won’t stop!
