This celebrity amongst Monardellas is frequently lusted after - even by those without much love for native plants! When we first saw this unusual native at the Tilden Botanic Garden - my, oh my! The sight of its grand floral display – tons of 2” tubes of scarlet red, clustered tightly together, looking skyward for potential hummingbird visitors – it is QUITE a compelling show, especially for such a small plant. When not in bloom, the low, creeping stems are fairly unassuming. To 4” high & about 1’ wide, it thrives best where the drainage is just right. Got a pot? Perfect! Add plenty of perlite & mind your watering - too much will be the death of it, too little it won’t allow it to grow to its full potential. Monardella micrantha grows most actively & happily through Spring, blooming in May & June, a while longer with some carefully administered Summer water.
