Epiphyllum

This breathtaking orchid cactus features six inch wide, brilliant fuchsia-red flowers, each with an inner ring of petals and pale yellow stamen. These blooms first appear as fat buds in February to May, then open to the short-lived but magnificent flowers. Plants first develop pendulous, broad, flat foliage to 30” long. They are best grown in a container and make a perfect hanging plant for the house. Native to Central and S. America, this succulent cactus is easy to grow, very low maintenance and a prolific bloomer when mature. Use a mix of equal parts potting soil and orchid bark to provide excellent drainage. To fertilize once flower buds appear, add bloom fertilizer to a shallow bowl of warm water and set the plant in it for 2-3 hours. The soil mix will draw up the fertilizer to the plant's roots. This epiphyllum can also be grown outdoors and brought inside during the colder winter days. Be careful to only prune your plant after it flowers.
