You can’t go wrong with this tough as nails perennial. Centaurea montana is a flamboyant blue “Cornflower” hailing from the Caucasus Mountains of Europe. This easy to grow perennial forms a dense 2’ high, and 2’ wide mounding clump of simple or lobed light silvery green leaves. Centaurea montana flowers all Summer, producing a succession of upright flowering stems, each sporting a highly decorative 2” showy purplish blue fringed flower. Cut back hard after the first flush to get a second round of blooms in Fall. This Centaurea also loves being divided every 2-3 years. Bees and butterflies are sure to be regular visitors. Plant in sun to light shade in well-drained soil. This plant adapts to a variety of soils and is drought tolerant once established. Great for cut flowers and self-sows!
