This award winning, golden-leaved perennial hailing from shady forested areas in Japan is the perfect way to add sunshine to a shady bed! Fast growing to 3-5' tall and wide, this shrub marks a bold contrast to other leafy green shrubs in a part shade bed. Forming a dense rounded form comprised of 4-6” long pinnate leaves, come summer it produces sprays of tiny white flowers. These are followed by small purple fruits much beloved by birds (though inedible to humans). Plants produce the desired golden color when given a few hours of sun. In full shade, leaf color is a muted lime green. Its bold foliage contrasts wonderfully with lacy plants such as larger ferns and Astilbe but it also performs well in a container. It prefers humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil and shelter from strong winds. Though deciduous, it is hardy down to -30 F. Not usually bothered by deer.
