Tree Onion, Topsetting Onion

When you aren’t looking, these onions rise up from the earth and idly stroll about the garden. Okay, not seriously - but they do form bulbils up to an inch across atop every blooming stalk and, if you leave them, these heads will become heavy and drop to the ground, spreading baby onions every which way. These babies can be harvested so that the original plants can be left in situ and you can avoid the labor of digging and dividing them to harvest. Originally discovered in Canada, this onion has a very strong and spicy flavor and the bulbils can be used just as you would any other onion. Bulbs are usually harvested in late Summer, greens can be used year round. Winter deciduous. Space 6-9”, grows to 2’ tall.
