Plant this North American native for a show-stopping autumnal display! Produces an aura of traffic stopping reddish-mauve flower spikes bloom late Summer into Fall that intensifies when backlit by the sun. These airy wands dry after frost and provide Winter interest. In Spring clumps of fine-textured, grayish-green leaves to 18-24” tall and wide emerge. Exceptionally rugged, it’s unfazed by Winter cold, Summer heat, drought, even clay soil. It’s also long-lived and low-maintenance. Native from Oklahoma south to central Texas, it’s a great choice for xeric or waterwise gardens and is especially striking when planted en masse. It is also showy enough to feature in a container. Plant in well-drained alkaline to neutral soil in full sun. Cut to the ground in late Winter. Seeds are a food source for songbirds and small mammals. Deer resistant.
