The flowers of this CA native Monkeyflower are spectacular: 2” wide and soft peachy apricot with a strikingly sculptured edge reminiscent of azaleas. Yet M. bifidus is the real unhybridized thing and is found growing wild in the Sierra Foothills, the Pinnacles and the Santa Lucia Mountains. It grows well in gardens as long as it is given good drainage. Lower in habit than other shrubby Mimulus, growing 2-4’ wide and high and is well suited for sunny as well as filtered sun locations. Because it does not require irrigation, it is a good choice under oaks as well as in containers. The flowers are very popular with hummingbirds, the whole plant highly deer resistant, particularly if you let it go Summer dormant.
