If toads swooned, that's just what they'd do over their namesake "Toad Lily," Tricyrtis formosana 'Dark Beauty'. Growing 2-3’ tall, it sports arched, 18" trailing stems topped with unusual star-shaped 1" blooms featuring gold throated, white tepals dotted with dazzling reddish-purple spots. Blooms from late Summer all the way to November. Not fussy about soil - acid, alkaline, sand, loam or well-draining clay are all okay, as long as some shade & adequate moisture are provided. Given time, it will spread to create many clusters. The russet, silky strands of Stipa arundinacea “New Zealand Wind Grass” will make a fine backdrop/companion for this orchid-like beauty. “Toad Lily” offers the added benefit of being completely uninteresting to any four-legged marauders (deer, rabbits etc.) in search of a bite to eat!
