Asclepias is the host plant for the Monarch butterfly and the sole food source for the Monarch butterfly caterpillar. Planting native Asclpeias, commonly known as Milkweed, will help feed and house not only Monarchs but also many other beneficial insects. Milkweeds are classic wildflowers, adding beauty and fragrance to sunny areas. Most Milkweeds bloom in pretty whites and pinks from late Spring through Summer, then go deciduous to return the following year. We recommend waiting one year before you share your Milkweed with Monarchs so plants can grow enough foliage to support the nesters and feasters.
