Peruvian Lily is an herbaceous perennial that grows from bulb-like tubers, producing new leafy stems every Spring. Its flowers bloom in Summer and Fall and then die down in Winter to reappear with new growth in Spring. The alstroemeria genus is the family Alstroemeria pygmaea, and it is native to South America.
The ASPCA lists Peruvian Lily as safe for cats and dogs, although Alstroemeria is listed elsewhere as mildly toxic if injected in large quantities. Symptoms from eating large quantities of alstroemeria are diarrhea and/or vomiting, but not serious or lasting illness.
Plant Lily of the Incas in full sun with moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Alstroemeria can be planted in beds and borders, containers, and in cut flower gardens as Alstroemeria flowers last up to 2 weeks in a vase.
