Talk about spectacular foliage! This often multi-trunked “Tea Tree” from Australia has slender lanceolate burgundy red leaves all along the branches creating a wispy dangling scene of high drama on this small open-form 15’x18’ tree. The inner leaves, when not exposed to sun, will be green, while the outer sun-touched foliage simmers in the forefront in its deep brooding wine colored hues. In the Spring sweetly scented .75” cream colored flowers bloom directly on the branches, contrasting perfectly with the red foliage and adding to the theatrical beauty of this dramatic tree. Imminently prune-able to whatever size is required, deer resistant, drought tolerant, suitable for coastal or inland gardens and evergreen (ever-red, really). To achieve maximum purple color throughout the tree thin the interior branches so the inside of the tree will have better sun exposure. Plant in full sun in well-draining soil with a healthy dose of high-quality compost for best growth. Water until roots are established, after which no summer water is required.
