Water-wise groundcovers and other lawn-to-garden options

Deciding to nix the lawn has never been easier! Now is a great time to plant low water, lawn alternatives because the cooler temps and fall and winter rains allow them to establish more robust root systems below, and foliage above, making it easier for them to tough it out with less water in summer. Water-wise grasses also add easy architectural interest too and not to mention look fabulous all year round. Lippia repens (syn. Phyla nodiflora) A carefree CA native that’s one of the best lawn substitutes around – especially for difficult areas where nothing will grow! Highly adaptive to most soils. CA Native Perennial Groundcover USDA Zone 8-11


Dymondia margaretae "Silver Carpet" Extremely drought tolerant, deer resistant and able to withstand plenty of foot traffic. It’s a great choice for replacing a lawn Perennial Groundcover USDA zones 9b-11


Callirhoe involucrata "Wine Cups" LONG-LIVED and TOUGH, this groundcover is ideal for spilling over the edge of dry and rock gardens where it’s vivid magenta blooms bloom prolifically May to September. Perennial USDA zones 5-9


Chaenorhinum origanifolium 'Blue Eyes' Masses of purple Snapdragon-like blooms practically smother this hardy and compact small-scale groundcover, spring-early summer. Great in containers, rock gardens and trailing over raised beds too. Drought tolerant once established but bloomiest with Summer water. Perennial USDA Zones 7-10a	Rubus calycinoides "Creeping Raspberry" A standout groundcover, it’s weed suppressing mat of leathery leaves is choice for a hillside. Tough, dependable, deer resistant, drought tolerant and NOT INVASIVE! Perennial Groundcover USDA Zones 6-10


Stipa arundinacea "New Zealand Wind Grass" Fast growing to 3’x3’ and always a glowing focal point. It’s carefree, long lived and great just about anywhere you plant it. Wonderful massed on a hillside or it can be grown in large containers too. Perennial Grass USDA Zones 8-10	Stipa pulchra "Purple Needlegrass" California’s state grass! Growing to 18” tall x 12” wide, it produces airy, waving seedheads that start purple and then become silvery-tan. Will go dormant in a dry summer garden, but otherwise will stay green all year. Self sows but not invasive CA Native Perennial Grass USDA zones 7-11

Fall is the perfect time to ditch the lawn and plant a beautiful water-wise garden. We’ve invited the experts from East Bay Municipal Utilities District (EBMUD), The Urban Farmer Store and the Contra Costa Water District (CCWD) to talk about how to get started, the best plant choices for our area, converting to water conserving drip irrigation and special lawn conversion rebate programs. Representatives from Our Water Our World wh will also be here from 10am – 2pm. They work with local water pollution prevention agencies, nurseries, manufacturers and consumers to educate and help reduce the risks associated with pesticide use.

Each of our speakers will stay in the nursery for an hour after their talk to answer all your questions.
