DON’T THROW SHADE ON SHADE!
If you had to make a list of Things Gardener's Dread, somewhere in the midst of rampant deer, killer clay and marauding gophers lies the silent but deadly SHADE. Some of us sun-loving gardeners see shade as a bane, but really, it can be an opportunity. Here are some of our favorite, tried and true shady characters.
Basil herbalea 'Wild Magic'
Osteospermum 'Zion Copper Amethyst'
Coleus 'Wizard Sunset'

Set your garden aglow with this compact and sun tolerant beauty. Growing to only 12-14” tall and wide, it’s multi-branching. Big and bold rich red leaves have golden scalloped edges. Lovely in the shade (tolerates morning sun) and in mixed containers. Make sure to place in a goodly amount of shade for best color. Pinch off blooms for best form, or leave them on to attract hummers.
Begonia 'Illumination Apricot'

Guaranteed spectacular! Aren’t we lucky! Fast growing and quick to bloom, you’ll soon have 100’s of gorgeous, double peachy-apricot blossoms, cascading beautifully from late spring till fall. Best in filtered shade with only AM sun and keep fairly moist. If you want to overwinter them, stop watering in late fall when the foliage turns yellow. Lift, dry and store tubers in a cool, dry place.
Geum coccineum ‘Totally Tangerine’ Vitex agnus-castus ‘Shoal Creek’
Helleborus orientalis 'Blushing Bridesmaid'

Hellebores - the shady superstars we LOVE that provide shiny greenery all spring and summer, and then reward you with gushingly gorgeous blooms winter thru early spring. From breeder Hans Hansen, this 'Blushing Bridesmaid' is delightfully double with 3” blooms in beauteous shades of raspberry-pink. Bred for extra vigor and bloominess, you can never go wrong with Hellebores, am I right? Tough as nails, CLAY TOLERANT, deer and rabbit resistant and incredibly long lived! Cut back old growth when new growth appears.
Oxalis 'Plum Crazy'

A striking shamrock-leaf wood sorrel with petite, vivid maroon leaves liberally marked with bright pink splashes. Each distinctive leaf is like its own miniature painting! Add in bright yellow ever-blooming flowers for a real show-stopper! Topping off at a modest 6” tall and 12” wide, it makes a wonderful ground cover. It’s the perfect choice for adding warm, sultry hues to the garden and makes its neighbors really pop! Can be grown indoors in areas where it’s not hardy. Plant in fertile, well-drained soil. Deer resistant.

Echeveria 'Lady Aquarius' Mandevilla 'Giant Crimson'
Centradenia floribunda "Spanish Shawl"

A pleasure to grow! EASY, fast and beautiful, this RARE Mexican relative of the “Princess Flower Tree” creates the prettiest, densest groundcover of rich reddish burgundy leaves 12-24” tall. Radiant, 2” fuchsia blooms stand out against the foliage. Choice in rock gardens, you can easily pinch back its soft stems to control spread. Cut back to 5” in winter for freshest appearance in spring.
Heuchera 'Marmalade'

With ruffled foliage aglow in sunset gold, peach and pink, THIS is the Heuchera to grow and use for smashing contrast, edging or to light up a shady spot. New growth is more vividly hued along with the pinky-red blooms that appear in late-spring on 2’ stems. To 1.5’ wide and 1’ tall, dry shade is even acceptable, once the plants are established. Drought Tolerant in shade.
