Thunbergia natalensis

Beautiful, rare, fast and easy to grow, this South African perennial is popular in its home country, why not here? Mostly unbranched, upright stems and attractive rich green heart-shaped leaves create a dense 30” x 3’ shrub-like form. Conspicuously displayed outside the foliage, plentiful good-sized 3” lavender-blue flowers highlighted by a bright golden-yellow throat appear mid-Spring thru Summer . Happiest in part shade and rich soil, it’s lovely in the foreground of roses, trees and taller shrubs. Deciduous. Cut old foliage to the ground in Winter. Hummingbirds!
