Crazy for Clematis!

It’s hard to think of a vine more diverse and divine than colorful charismatic Clematis! With an extraordinarily vast array of flower shapes, sizes, colors and bloom times – not to mention hardiness (many down to USDA zone 4!) – there really is one for every gardener, no matter their tastes.

Tremendously useful in the landscape, some of the smaller vines are perfect for delicately twining up a trellis or arch, while a few of the larger, more muscular varieties can cover an ugly fence or screen out a neighbor in a snap. And the flowers! Swoon! Hummingbirds, butterflies, bees and other pollinators will flock to their nectar-rich buffet!

Fanciful ruby-wine fireworks go off in profusion early Summer thru Fall on this reliable heirloom variety. Performs beautifully in warm-Winter areas like ours, where many large-flowered varieties refuse to grow. Deer resistant! Hardy USDA zone 3!

One of the EASIEST Clematis you can grow, especially in mild Winter climates like ours where larger flowered hybrids fail to thrive! Vigorous and profusely blooming early to late Summer, grow it on a support where the heavenly royal purple 3-4” blooms will smother the foliage. To 10’+ in a single season, it’s a perfect choice for new gardeners! Deer and disease resistant. Hardy USDA zone 4!

Hundreds of vanilla-scented blooms virtually smother this evergreen, fast-growing vine, providing a nectar treat for bees and butterflies all Spring. Twining tendrils rapidly grow to 15’, perfect for growing along a walkway, over an arch or up the side of the house. Hardy USDA zone 6.

Delectable 2-3” tulip-shaped bicolor blooms are a welcome sight early Summer to frost on this vigorous yet well-behaved vine. An heirloom from 1890, it reaches a modest 10-12' in height, making it perfect for a trellis or arch. Can take more sun than many varieties. Hardy USDA zone 4.

Blessed with a heady vanilla fragrance and an incredible solid cascade of starry 1” blooms late Summer thru Fall, “Sweet Autumn Clematis” is a “can’t-kill-it” vigorous grower – reaching 20’ in its first or second year! Use it to cover a fence, arbor or pillar in a jiffy. Hardy USDA zone 4!

Prized for its beauty and low-fuss toughness, ‘Blue Bird’ isn’t fazed by extreme heat, cold, humidity or seaside conditions. Masses of lightly scented 3” semi-double flowers late Spring to mid-Summer. Tolerates shade and blooms on old wood, so no pruning necessary! To 12’. Hardy USDA zone 4.
