Our Dreamiest Combo!
Fave Combo!

If we had to share the ONE plant combo that, year after year, never fails to inspire and delight us and our visitors, surely it must be this sweetest of Springtime plantings. First featured in our inaugural catalog in 2006 (!), we continue to fill our demonstration beds and sample pots with this easy and rewarding, long-blooming mix of California native and Mediterranean wildflowers.

Quintessential thriller and spiller, Nemophila menziesii "Baby Blue Eyes" is the backbone of so many of our Spring gardens. As a cool season annual, it blooms its heart out for months – from earliest Spring until the weather heats up. The last crops roll out in late April (and it won't be available again until Fall!), so now is the time to plant if you want to enjoy its effervescent cheer for as long as possible!

Pair it with kissing cousin Nemophila menziesii ‘Snow White’, Malcolmia maritima "Virginia Stock" and Limnanthes douglasii  “Meadow Foam” for a sweetly scented riot of color and charm that will self-sow for more fun next Spring. Make it a party and throw in Platystemon californicus "Cream Cups", its primrose yellow inflated buds seen just starting to unfurl in the photo above.

Nemophila menziesii "Baby Blue Eyes"
Our favorite California native wildflower – the true blue color of a clear Springtime sky! We use it extensively to fill in and trail perfectly over the edge of all our beds. Self-sows!

Malcolmia maritima "Virginia Stock"
Easy as pie and sweetly scented, zillions of color coordinated lavender, rose or white phlox-like flowers make dreamy drifts wherever you plant them. Long-blooming and self-sows!
Nemophila menziesii ‘Snow White’ Limnanthes douglasii  “Meadow Foam”

Nemophila menziesii ‘Snow White’
Blooming its heart out in frothy masses of elegant pure white, ‘Snow White’ perfectly blends and complements, no matter what your color scheme - especially reds, blues and yellows! Self-sows.

Limnanthes douglasii  “Meadow Foam”
Forming a glossy green, weed-supressing mat, this EASY native wildflower boasts fragrant lemony yellow flowers with bright white tips. A cinch to grow! Self-sows!

Check out our VIDEO spotlighting even more of our favorite dream-team combinations. So many of these wonderful CA natives and Mediterranean annuals self-sow, which means you'll enjoy repeat performances next Spring and beyond!

For maximum happiness (yours AND the plants), be sure to give your hearty new friends well-draining and fertile soil (i.e.: NOT heavy clay!). A 1" layer of compost on top of the soil just after planting will give them a much-appreciated boost and get them off to a good start.
