Primary Pop!
This week's combo is a study in color!
Primary Pop Garden

When our sample pots of Lupinus regalis 'Thomas Church' go into bloom in the nursery, visitors go nuts! And with good reason. Luscious bi-colored spikes in royal purple and primrose yellow are dramatic all alone but really pop when planted with complimentary bloomers. It's the perfect mid-bed vertical accent with 8-12" fragrant spikes that keep the bees, butterflies and hummers happy from Spring into Summer (deadhead for longest bloom time). We collect our own seed for this beauty and can usually offer only one crop per year – and this is it!

In this gloriously glowing garden, Thomas is in excellent company: righteous red Papaver sp. "Greek Poppy" and showy orange Cheiranthus x allionii provide contrast and sparkle, while sunny CA native wildflower Layia platyglossa "Tidy Tips" complements the yellow "banners" of the Lupine. Sprinkle in frothy white self-sowing Omphalodes linifolia “Venus’ Navelwort” (front right) here and there and voila! Magic!

Papaver sp. ‘Greek’ “Greek Poppy”

Lupinus regalis ‘Thomas Church’
One of the most sought-after plants in the nursery, and for good reason! Beautiful bi-color purple and yellow blooms are what cottage garden dreams are made of – plus, deer/mildew resistant and reliably perennial! Hardy to USDA zone 4.

Papaver sp. ‘Greek’ “Greek Poppy”
Our favorite red poppy!
More wildflowery than any other with its multitude of slender stems and profusion of brightest true red flowers over a long period, it's a must-plant in our book! Self-sows for future freebies!
Cheiranthus x allionii “Siberian Wallflower” Layia platyglossa “Tidy Tips"

Cheiranthus x allionii “Siberian Wallflower”
Easy and fast to bloom, “Siberian Wallflower” smothers itself in orange flower clusters all Spring and Summer with deadheading. Deliciously fragrant – like Narcissus! CLAY tolerant, deer resistant and not fussy about soil. Hardy USDA zone 3.

Layia platyglossa “Tidy Tips"
Like a blast of sunshine, the profuse bloominess of our CA native "Tidy Tips" brightens the Spring garden for instant happiness! Nice and bushy to 18" tall, it harmonizes with just about every color and bees love it! Self-sows!

Check out our VIDEO spotlighting even more of our favorite dream-team combinations. So many of these wonderful CA natives and Mediterranean annuals self-sow, which means you'll enjoy repeat performances next Spring and beyond!

For maximum happiness (yours AND the plants), be sure to give your hearty new friends well-draining and fertile soil (i.e.: NOT heavy clay!). A 1" layer of compost on top of the soil just after planting will give them a much-appreciated boost and get them off to a good start.
