Ellyn will address so many of the issues facing hillside gardeners and share her best tips and techniques for assessing your situation and exposure, irrigation best practices, design techniques, and, of course, plant selection!

To just 1’ high and 1-3’ wide, ‘Wayne’ is an excellent choice for dry borders, parking strips or hillsides. Rugged and reliable but more compact and less rampant thank other California Fuchsias. Platinum foliage and flashy crimson trumpets make a stunning show Summer into late Fall!

Salvia leucophylla x clevelandii ‘Pozo Blue’
A natural hybrid discovered as a seedling by Las Pilitas Nursery, ‘Pozo Blue’ inherited S. leucophylla’s extreme toughness and S. clevelandii’s scented foliage. Super adaptable to soils, including sand and CLAY! Cold, heat and drought tolerant and deer resistant!

“Hummingbird Sage”

A showy native groundcover for dry shade! Blooming Spring thru Summer, 1” bright magenta flowers sprout from burgundy calyces. To 1-3’ tall, it spreads by rhizomes to 4’ across with fruity scented leaves. Grows well under oaks!

Achillea millefolium 'Red Velvet'
One of the candy-appley reddest Yarrows we’ve ever seen! Drought, deer and clay tolerant, it's super adaptable to low/high water and makes a fantastic 1' x 2' filler in hillside gardens with flower spikes topping 3'. Evergreen in warm Winter areas, hardy to USDA zone 3!

Ceanothus ‘Joyce Coulter’
For sunny dry slopes, 'Joyce' is a fantastic, long-lived, large-scale groundcover, growing up to 2’ x 8’, taking up a large footprint with almost no care. Fragrant blue blooms in Spring are attractive to bees, butterflies and hummers. Evergreen, clay tolerant and fire-resistant, deer resistant!

For shady slopes, this durable CA native is an excellent and EASY long-lived choice. Those fancy, colorful hybrid Heucheras can’t hold a candle to the toughness of this species! Attractive upright blooms over a long period, thrives under oaks, drought tolerant and deer resistant!

Lessingia filaginifolia 'Silver Carpet'
Tough as nails and happy in extreme conditions like CLAY, HEAT and DROUGHT, this native groundcover quickly spreads to 3' or more, making a dense, flat, weed suppressing silvery carpet only a few inches tall – great for parking strips or hillsides! Grows well under oaks!
