This showy bulb forms 6-8” wide, densely packed, dome-shaped flower heads comprised of over 100 bluish-purple blooms in mid-Spring. The bulbs form relaxed rosettes of strappy leaves (to 18” wide) in late Fall. In Spring it sends up stiff, 6-12” tall flower stalks, each topped by a rounded inflorescence with scads of .25”, star-shaped, lavender blooms with gorgeous cobalt blue centers. Buds open from the bottom up, prolonging the bloom season, which can last 3-4 weeks. Native to the Mediterranean (not Peru as the species name suggests), where it has naturalized under Summer-dry conditions and will go dormant in Summer. However it’s also happy with Summer water, which will drastically prolong the show of foliage. Plant in fertile well-drained soil. I’ve noticed that bees especially are drawn to the flowers. Excellent as a cut flower.
