Helleborus orientalis ‘Double Spotted’

In 2005 we received seeds from Russell Graham, the renowned plantsman from Corvallis, Oregon. He collected seeds from the best seedlings in his breeding program. We were the lucky recipients & a particularly appealing seedling showed up in my garden. Very vigorous with nodding semi-double strawberry ice cream colored flowers, splashed with deep burgundy spots. It starts blooming in early Spring & can have a 8-10 week bloom period. Like most hellebores, the flowers fade to a very attractive chartreuse green, retaining some spots. I can’t promise that you will get exactly what I have (this is not a tissue cultured clone), but it is bound to be nice. Hellebores thrive in a woodland setting or planted between deciduous shrubs & a clump can become 1-3’ tall & wide, often getting bigger by self-sowing. The Lenten Rose will do better in coastal mild Winters than the “Christmas Rose” (H. niger) & in mild Winters the leaves stay evergreen, in colder climates they will go deciduous.
