| Lewisia cotyledon
‘Sunset Strain’
Gorgeous in flower, this perennial jewel of the Pacific Northwest is also extremely hardy, long blooming and low maintenance if you provide it with a happy home. From a burst of bloom in May, it continues to deliver a succession of flower clusters to September in a radiant range of sunset colors (apricot pink, soft tangerine and soft yellow) - all lovely. Held atop sturdy 6” stems, the 1” flowers are held in radiating clusters above an attractive succulent 5" green rosette that develops into a considerable mound with time. Deeply tap-rooted, Lewisia benefits from some dryness, so all you have to do is plant them in a clay pot with some gravel added or stick them in the cracks of a rock wall (they love that) or enjoy them in a well-drained rock garden. That's not asking much, eh? Though they say not to, I give them a little bit of compost every year (I can't resist!) and they bloom even more - hee-hee!
