Fremontodendron californicum
“Flannel Bush”
One of the few survivors from 60 million years ago, when California was less mountainous & more tropical. At that time, Fremontodendron californicum was widely distributed throughout the foothills. A fast-growing, much-branching shrub, it can reach 15’ tall & 12’ wide. Large & very showy, brilliant gold blossoms appear over a long period in the Spring, & sometimes again in Fall. The deep green leaves are leathery on top & softly hairy beneath. “Flannel Bush” requires poor to moderately fertile soil & a hillside planting is your best bet, as it requires very good drainage. The roots are shallow, so it’s also a good idea to stake when young. Hardy to 5 degrees Fahrenheit. Contact with foliage may irritate skin. No Summer water once established.
