Laserpitium siler ssp. siculum
“Mountain Cumin”
For the love of umbels! Those wonderful plants that bring us charming resting spots for butterflies & countless beneficial pollinators, the more we grow, the more we admire & appreciate them! Particularly handsome, long lived, tough & EASY to grow, “Mountain Cumin” from the mountains of central & southern Europe creates eye-fetching, dense, blue green mounds of elegant, ferny foliage to 3’ across. I’d want it in my garden even if it never bloomed, which it does of course, bearing large “Queen Anne’s Lace” flower heads all Summer long. Drought tolerant, adaptable to all soils, including sand & CLAY, it’s deciduous in Winter & hardy to -10F. Bonus: Both the blooms & foliage are valuable for flower arranging & the seeds when crushed emit a rich cumin scent. Long used as a spice, sweetener & herbal medicine. Rare!
