Calystegia purpurea ssp. purpurata
“Coast Morning Glory”

photo:Avis Boutell
Our dear customers ask us for native vines so very often, & here’s one that I think you folks will really enjoy. It’s superficially “Bindweed”-esque, but this native actually belongs here & deserves to be included in gardens as well. Plus, it’s far & away more manageable & polite. Large white to apple blossom pink flowers are its most prominent feature – these 3” beauties bloom in the latter parts of Spring all the way through Fall! Very clay tolerant & at ease with long periods of drought, a full grown specimen can climb anywhere from 6 to 15’, but largely this depends on the support available near where you plant it. In the wild you can often see the plant’s specious white flowers peeking through the crown of some woody shrub & it can be planted in the garden in a similar way for a delightful effect. Needs an occasional drink for best appearance, & goes somewhat deciduous in Winter.
