Isoplexis chalcantha
Russet & orange spikes of flowers provide rich color to the dry garden on this evergreen shrubby perennial, native to the Canary Isles & now sadly close to extinction. Isoplexis are scarce in the nursery for other reasons – no matter how many we propagate they always seem to fly out the door – their tolerance of a hot, dry life & their colorful flowers make them a hot ticket, but they’re easy to grow in the garden if you take care to not over-water or over-feed. Good drainage will help them towards a longer stay, but the plants are relatively short lived even so. We’re still learning about this Canary rarity! We think it blooms in Spring & on into Summer & grows to 3’ high & wide, but let us know how it does in your garden. Leaves are a deep green & lance shaped, & with flower spikes that are a foot or more in length.
