Marcetella moquiniana
“Stick of Blood”
EXCLUSIVE!
photo(right):Juan Bibiloni Pou
Beautiful & ornamental, blue-green, oval-shaped leaves, distinctive red stems & showy seed pods make this very rare Canary Island shrub/small tree possibly our coolest offering for 2010! Drought tolerant & fast growing with an open crown to 6-12’ tall, this evergreen (ever-blue?) woody relative of the Rose displays “Stick of Blood” stem-tops covered in thick bright red hairs. The long bloom season - from June-September - gives us small green or rose blooms (depending on sex) followed by showy dense sprays of winged brownish red seed pods. Makes a fabulous container specimen! Medicinal too as the stem juice is used to heal wounds & the roots are boiled to aid digestive problems. Best in rich, well-drained (even rocky) soil. Cut back in Winter for compact form.
