Helianthus microcephalus ‘Lemon Queen’
“Small-Headed Sunflower”

Helianthus microcephalus ‘Lemon Queen’ “Small-Headed Sunflower” Helianthus microcephalus ‘Lemon Queen’ “Small-Headed Sunflower”

close-up: keithhull form photo:Kristin Green

Masses of refreshing soft yellow blooms from AUGUST -SEPTEMBER just when so much of our gardening consists of clean-up chores! Now this naturally occurring Midwestern hybrid is a big tough boy & he’ll grow from 5-8’ tall (depending on water & soil) but only grows to 3’ across & spreads slowly unlike some other Helianthus we know! Finely textured with zillions of 2” blooms & smallish 3-4” long rich green foliage. A bee & butterfly magnet, it TOLERANTES POOR SOIL & SHADE & OCCASIONAL WATERING. Plant this happy adaptable & useful late season perennial at the back of the bed, in a big empty corner, or where the blooms can spill over a fence or show off your fearless gardening chops & plant it right up front in your parking strip! Deciduous in Winter.
