Nolina interrata

 

A VERY RARE plant with only a few populations found in San Diego County through Northern Baja, Nolina interrata is on the CNPS list of rare & endangered plants. A real knockout with pale blue strap-like leaves, it glows among other plants. Our plants are a mix of male & female plants, but both bloom with 5’ flower stalks of creamy flowers. The female plants will continue to be ornamental as they develop rusty-red papery seeds that look great with the blue foliage. We can’t tell which are female until they bloom so get a couple to increase your chances if you are set on seed. Found growing in chaparral, this Nolina will like well-drained soil & can deal with drought just fine. The seed for these plants was generously shared by the great folks at the Ruth Bancroft Garden in Walnut Creek, CA. Growing to around 3’ tall & 4’ wide.
