Pepper ‘Cheiro Recife’
(syn: Capsicum chinensis)
A Habanero without the heat? A novelty for those of us who have never dared to eat a Habanero Pepper (or do not wish to do it again). It retains the fruity candy-like flavor that Pepper aficionados love (& has just a dash of heat). Brazil seems to be a hot bed for Peppers, with or without heat & this variety was brought back from Recife in 2001. ‘Cheiro’ means scent & it is indeed highly aromatic. The peppers are around 1” long & are produced in profusion. As with all C. chinensis peppers, plant in good garden soil, but water deeply & let the soil dry out or the flavor will become bitter. It is easily grown as an annual in all zones & may become perennial in USDA Zones 9-10. If very happy, it may become a 5’ shrub! It is also a fine ornamental perennial in big pots where it can be protected against Winter cold.
