Garlic Chives
“Nira”
photo: DelosJ
An unusual vegetable with a distinctive growth habit of strap-shaped leaves & thin, white flower stalks that are much taller than the leaves. It grows to 12-19" in slowly expanding perennial clumps. Besides its use as a vegetable, it also has attractive flowers, which are sometimes used as a spice. Clip the plant down regularly to keep it producing. A relatively new
vegetable in the English-speaking world but well-known in Asian cuisine, the flavor of garlic chives is more like garlic than chives, though much milder. Both leaves & the stalks of the flowers are used as a flavoring as well as a stir fry ingredient. In China, they are often used to make dumplings with a combination of egg, shrimp & pork.
