Sophora cassioides

Flowering bountifully on bare branches in Spring, this very rare (but fast & easy!) Chilean native creates a long lasting massive display of showy, large bright yellow flaring bells with lovely long stamens, held in dense clusters. So pretty & hummers love them! Growing to 3’ tall in year one & to about 9’ in year 2, it reaches 20-30’ in its native habitat (probably not here) but can be cut back to shrub size it's said. Highly attractive pea-like foliage on arching branches, too. But wait - there’s more! The flowers are followed by small fruits held on long beaded strings adding extra charm come Fall. This glorious tree loves part shade & well tolerates full shade as well. Generally starts to blooms in its 4th year. Best in rich, moist soil.
