Malacothrix saxatilis ssp. implicata

Malacothrix saxatilis ssp. implicata

When the spring flowers start fading in California, this shrubby aster from the Channel Islands really starts to shine. The 1” pure white flowers have a yellow center & are produced steadily over a long period. To me, they mean summer in California. They are also favored by many native bees, in particular by the intensely green sweat bees. The shrub grows to around 3' tall/wide, & its delicate ferny foliage stays green & very fresh-looking through the driest of summers. No additional water is needed on the coast of California. In the Fall the stems look a bit bit lanky, & they benefit from being shortened, but it is not necessary & the shrub does not need any other maintenance. It grows up fast, but it has been in my garden for 8 years & shows no signs of getting old. The seed is very scarce, & if you want this plant, TAKE IT WHEN YOU SEE IT. It may be a while before you see it again. Highly recommended for the sunny dry garden!
