Aeonium canariensis
“Giant Velvet Rose”

Aeonium canariensis “Giant Velvet Rose” Aeonium canariensis “Giant Velvet Rose”
photo:(left) Opuntia

Pleasing to the eye, & pleasing to the touch, this low-branching succulent is easy to grow, tolerant of dry shade, & can be massed as a groundcover. Fab, no? Very similar to Aeonium palmense, this species from the Canary Islands grows 1' high when not in bloom, with 1' wide rosettes comprised of velvetine cloaked leaves. Offsetting will eventually yeild clumps 2-3' wide. Blooming stems packed with yellow flowers emerge in Summer, reaching up to 3', & are very attractive to bees and butterflies! Each rosette is monocarpic, & will die after flowering. Though very tolerant of drought, it will look best with a bit of supplemental water. Tolerant of many soil types!
