| Brassica oleracea var. longata
“Walking Stick Kale”/ “Jersey Kale”
Would someone please plant a giant isle of these along their driveway like faux-palm trees?? Edible, useful, & hilarious, this form of Kale has been cultivated for over 200 years on the Channel Islands. Stalks grow 7’ in one season, producing heaping loads of edible, cabbagey leaves in the process, & trunks can eventually reach a whopping & intimidating 18’ high! To make your walking stick, let the plants grow as high as you want them, then behead the stalk & let it dry for at least a season. Plant 3’ apart. Full sun & rich soil is best, but this is a vegetable that can certainly tolerate less than perfect conditions.
