| Bulbine latifolia “Rooiwortel”
Bulbine latifolia makes a pretty rosette that resembles a smooth, thorn-less Aloe. The foliage is a nice apple green. In late winter through early Spring it produced stalks of fragrant, yellow flowers. The rosette grows to be about 1’ tall & 2’ wide. It looks great planted in mass, or makes an excellent accent. Native to South Africa, it likes well-drained soil, but responds well to a top-dressing of compost. The name “Rooiwortel” means red root (they have a reddish cast to them) & are actually used medicinally to stop vomiting. Good to know. Plus the leaf stems can be snapped & used like aloe vera on burns.
