“Spinning Top Conebush”

This Leucadendron is called “Spinning Top Conebush”
because the flowers resemble spinning tops. The female plants
have very showy flower “cones” that have shades
of copper, purple & yellow. Each flower can reach 5”
long & bloom Spring-Summer. From South Africa, it is found
on well-drained sandstone slopes. So it will want a spot in
the garden that has good drainage & since it is used to
poor soil, it resents fertilizers being added to the soil.
The silvery-green leaves are leathery & attractively shaped.
The foliage reminds me of an undersea plant billowing about
in the ocean currents. It is a substantial shrub reaching
5’-6’ tall with upright branches. The foliage
& flowers make good dried arrangements. Frost tender.
