Leucadendron rubrum
“Spinning Top Conebush”

Leucadendron rubrum “Spinning Top Conebush”

This Leucadendron is called “Spinning Top Conebush” because the flowers resemble spinning tops. The female plants have very showy flower “cones” that have shades of copper, purple & yellow. Each flower can reach 5” long & bloom Spring-Summer. From South Africa, it is found on well-drained sandstone slopes. So it will want a spot in the garden that has good drainage & since it is used to poor soil, it resents fertilizers being added to the soil. The silvery-green leaves are leathery & attractively shaped. The foliage reminds me of an undersea plant billowing about in the ocean currents. It is a substantial shrub reaching 5’-6’ tall with upright branches. The foliage & flowers make good dried arrangements. Frost tender.
