Callirhoe involucrata
“Wine Cups”
Luscious & glowing, cerise-magenta “Wine Cups” is one of the showiest of our native Midwestern perennials. Thriving in heat & low water, it’s a sprawling plant with ground-hugging stems to 3’ long, producing lots of bright, 2”, open-faced cups for several months in Summer. The attractive, deep green, deeply cut, roundish leaves provide a welcome relief from the more common silvery grays of the dry garden. Its trailing form looks best spilling over a wall or front of a dry bed or scrambling through short grasses. Striking when combined with fuzzy gray plants like “Lamb’s Ears” or one of my favorites, Sideritis cypria or partnered with lemon yellow bloomers. Infertile & well-drained soil is best.
