A super short, practically flat growing California native that’s native to wetland areas. This subspecies is more compactly growing than the regular species, with smaller, slightly toothed, hairless leaves. Thin, 4” red stems support flowers that are less than an inch across and often spattered with symmetrical red spots. Tolerant of many soils and spreads moderately where moisture is present. Potentially groundcover-ey, and super-cute pond-side, in between pavers, or incorporated in meadow plantings. Spring and Summer blooming, and self sows where not hardy!
