Bronze Fennel
(Foeniculum vulgare)

Tall and graceful, aromatic, medicinal and edible Bronze fennel also provides an attractive color and foliage contrast in the flowerbed or herb garden. Its feathery thread like leaves gives a smoky, effect that relieves a mass of more solid, leafy foliage. Not only that, it’s a superb habitat plant as it functions as a host plant for the Swallowtail Butterfly (and provides a wonderful eco-science project for the kids). Flat umbels of tiny, yellowish flowers appear in late Summer and should be harvested before they set seed to prevent a rash of unwanted seedlings. You can save the seeds for medicinal and culinary uses. 3-4’ tall. Well-drained loamy soil is best.
